Colorful History of 12-Time NFL Champion Green Bay Packers
67Top 10 career ground gainers
1. Jim Taylor (1958-1966)_A bruiser from Louisiana State, Taylor finished with 8,207 yards. He led the team in rushing his final seven seasons, going over the 1,000-yard plateau five times including a career- and league-high 1,474 during his Most Valuable Player season of 1962. Taylor averaged 4.5 yards per carry and scored 81 touchdowns, including 15 in 1961 and 19 in 1962. He surpassed 100 yards in a game 26 times.
2. Ahman Green (2000-06)_This speedster gained 8,162 yards, averaging 1,166 yards per season in green and gold. Green didn't quite catch Taylor in total yards, but he broke the former's single-season standard with 1,883 during the 2003 campaign. The Nebraska product broke the 1,000-yard barrier every year except for his injury-riddled 2005 campaign. He turned in the top two single-game totals (regular season) in team history with 192 and 218 yards against Philadelphia and Denver, respectively, both in 2003. He finished with 33 100-yard outings.
3. John Brockington (1971-1977)_He finished his career with 5,024 yards after becoming the first running back in NFL history to reach the 1,000-yard mark in his first three seasons. Brockington, like Taylor, dished out punishment every step of the way, and that battering style curtailed his Packer and NFL career. He set a team rookie standard with 1,105 yards and surpassed the century mark 13 times during his stay in Green Bay.
4. Tony Canadeo (1941-1944 and 1946-1952)_Born in Chicago, the "Gray Ghost" is one of only five players whose jerseys have been retired (he wore the No. 3). He surpassed 100 yards nine times and became the first Packer to shatter the 1,000-yard mark with 1,052 in 1949, the only time he accomplished that feat. He still led the team in rushing five times, including four in a row from 1946-49.
5. Dorsey Levens (1994-2001)_He managed to play all 16 games only twice in his Green Bay career but finished with 3,937 yards. Levens broke the 1,000-yard plateau twice, including his wonderful 1997 performance in which he nearly broke Taylor's single-season mark with 1,435 yards. That year included his 190-yard effort against Dallas, which was the standard until Green broke it twice in 2003. He reached 100 yards or more 10 times.
6. Clarke Hinkle (1932-1941)_He led the squad in rushing seven times in totaling 3,860 career yards. His season best was 552 yards in 11 games during 1937, and his 4.8 yards per carry average helped the Packers win the NFL title in 1936. Hinkle was named to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1964.
7.Gerry Ellis (1980-1986)_He finished with 3,826 yards rushing but was a key contributor out of the backfield for some of Green Bay's most high-powered offensive machines. Ellis still holds the Packer mark for highest career average per carry at 4.58 (750 or more attempts), including a 5.5 effort in 1985. His season high for yards was 860 in 1981 and he had a career long 71-yard scamper in 1983.
8. Paul Hornung (1957-1962 and 1064-1966)_The Golden Boy was the Packers' triple threat, also dazzling defenses with his passing and receiving abilities. He finished with 3,711 yards despite missing the 1963 season due his suspension for gambling. Hornung never gained more than 681 yards in a season (1959), but averaged 4.2 per try and scored 50 touchdowns.
9. Edgar Bennett (1992-1996)_He became the first Packer back since Terdell Middleton in 1978 to surpass 1,000 yards when he finished the 1995 campaign with 1,067 in 1995. Bennett finished with 3,353 yards, following up his career year with 899 yards in helping the Packers to their first Super Bowl appearance since January 1968. He recorded a career best 4.0 per carry that season.
10. Donny Anderson (1966-1971)_The Texas Tech graduate and bonus baby gained 3,165 yards in a Green Bay uniform and suited up in all 14 games every season. He churned for 761 yards and a career high 4.5 average in 1968 and established a personal best with 853 yards in 1970. Anderson led the team in rushing TDs four times.
